Just because you're renting doesn't mean you don't deserve to be protected. In fact, as a renter you may feel even more vulnerable: you're often new to neighborhoods and don't know the other neighbors as well as you otherwise might. It's possible to install a home security system even if you are a renter. Here's what you need to know.

Dealing With a Home Security Alarm Company

You'll need your landlord's permission to work through a home security alarm company, as they need to physically install devices throughout the home. Before you talk to them, take a walk through the home and look for small boxes on the walls or ceilings of your closets or near windows. It's possible a security system is already wired, which means that the disruption would be minimal.

Some landlords are more than willing to let you install a security system; after all, what protects their tenants also protects them. A tenant who is robbed blind may not be able to come up with rent money. However, you also need to talk to the security alarm company as well. Some of them will move your system with you when you go.

Installing Smart Security Devices

Some home security companies will have security systems available for purchase that don't need to be physically installed. Many of these devices are smart, modular systems, which can just be placed around your home, such as motion-activated cameras. You can ask your local home security company for information about what they can offer.

Some systems include:

  1. Door and window sensors that can be glued to the wall, rather than screwed in. These are wireless, so they don't require any wiring to be run through the walls.
  2. Wireless, motion-activated cameras. These cameras are just plugged into the wall and report through wireless internet connections.

However, the disadvantage to this is that because they aren't wired, they may not be as reliable. They also often don't come with a monitored security service; you're going to need to monitor it yourself.

Even if you're a renter, there are some options available to you. You can contact your local home security company to find out more, and then present your options to your landlord. As home security systems become more advanced and more reliable, they are also becoming more accessible and affordable. You may even be able to save money on your renter's insurance.
